The Boss 302 was born in 1969 as a response from Ford to the popularity of SCCA Trans-Am series racing - road course stock car racing where displacement had a limitation of 305 cubic inches. While the Boss did not win within its first year on the market, it was able to squeak away with a first place finish in the hands of Bud Moore in 1970. By this time, due to the masses of recent attention this car had received, the automotive world knew that this machine was something special, and may be quite literally “The Boss” of not only the pony car field, and contend with even the big block muscle cars of the late 60's and early 70's. This specific Boss model makes a statement in its all original, unrestored condition, fitted from the factory with a small block, pushrod 302 cubic inch V8 with solid lifters, an aluminum high-riser manifold, high-capacity dual-point ignition, four-bolt central-main-bearing caps, cross-drilled forged crankshaft, and special pistons making 290 horsepower and 290 lb/ft of torque, but many had reckoned it was most likely around 350 on both figures considering a 0-60 time of just 6.5 seconds and a quarter mile of about 14.6 seconds, lightning fast for the time, and still extremely impressive today. The boss was ripping its largest contender to shreds on the performance side of the game, rocking a 4 speed Hurst shifter and a 3.91 rear end gearing, giving a final wave goodbye while ripping off the starting line to whatever other pony car wanted to try its hand at a race with this horse. The sales on the other hand…well. Ford only released 7,000 of these beasts into the wild while its competitors like Chevy had ramped their production of performance pony cars the same year. The legacy of the Boss 302 has much to do with its general rarity and beauty compared to other performance cars of the time period. This model came equipped from the factory with the optional rear louvers and rear spoiler. It is generally hard to come by one of these beasts even in an unoriginal, aftermarket state, but to see a fully original, unrestored Boss 302 Mustang with only 17,500 miles is something truly special. You might as well have it placed in a museum.
